Biotechnology

Explore the role of DNA in medicine and society!  This applied science course will include topics such as genetics, microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, and bioethics.  Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing career fields with job opportunities from entry level to PhD.  Students will learn biotechnology lab skills and apply these skills during hands-on labs to manipulate DNA, examine proteins and grow bacterial cultures.  This course is an excellent companion to any health or medical career plan.

Cell and molecular Biology will expand on the methods and techniques introduced in Biotechnology.  We will base our advanced explorations on the principles of biology, chemistry and physics to understand the structure and function of cells from the molecular to the cellular level.  There will be many hands-on opportunities to apply the methods and techniques of DNA and protein analysis to the health and medical fields.  This class includes a considerable amount of laboratory work, as well as opportunities for field trips and cooperative learning experiences.
