 Pharmacology 1

Are you interested in exploring career opportunities in the medical field?  

The communication and collaboration skills learned in the Pharmacy program can springboard you into a pharmacy career as well as other allied healthcare professions.

Have you ever wondered how medications work?  This course begins with the basic principles of pharmacology.  We explore how medication affect the human body and how our bodies process the medications.  The course is organized by body systems, pathologies and the associated medications.  The coursework is augmented with a special project that study the effects of pharmaceuticals on the environment.  Pharmacology is an excellent supplement to any pathway offered at HeLa or as a place to start the Pharmacy Pathway.

Prerequisite:  Chemistry or permission from the instructor

 

Pharmacology 2

This class is a continuation of the academic and technical knowledge gained in Pharmacy 1.  The second semester continues to cover body systems, pathologies and the associated medications.  

Prerequisite: Pharmacy 1 or permission from the instructor

 

Pharmacy Practice 1 

In Pharmacy Practice students gain knowledge about technical skills, regulations, and pharmacy procedures. The HeLa High School Pharmacy gives students the opportunity to practice the skills that are involved in working in a retail and hospital pharmacy.  Tasks include activities such as stocking, outdating, dispensing, and working with a Pyxis. Students will learn how to perform calculations commonly used in pharmacies and compound non-sterile and sterile products. Communication skills are emphasized and students will learn how to collaborate with colleagues, develop a team-based mindset, and practice critical thinking.  

This class is preparation for students who would like Work-Site Learning experience in a pharmacy during the last semester.

 

Pharmacy Practice 2

Students will be in the field working in a pharmacy or associated healthcare environment.  Our business community partners cooperate with our pharmacy program to give students a real world experience.  Students will collaborate with their worksite supervisor to achieve their skills goals.  

Students will have the opportunity to update their resumes, identify job and training options, and receive coaching on the next steps for success for their lives after graduation.
